Wk3 REFLECTION: JAMA POMM Schmidt “When You Come Into My Room”
Details
This poem is the first of two reflection prompts for this week from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) series “A Piece of My Mind” (POMM), where medical practitioners and care recipients reflect on their personal experiences. Please reflect on each short article, submitting your short essays about each in the corresponding module. Both JAMA POMM articles provide insight into the benefits of Narrative Medicine: one from the provider and one from the patient perspective.
Once you’ve drafted your short reflection essay, check the rubric associated with this module: make sure that the components we grade – like spelling, grammar, paragraph structure, and citation of reference works – are addressed in your submission. This rubric is designed to spell-out the requirements of communicating at an undergraduate level starting this week, such as proofreading and citation of source material.
Reflection Assignment: A Piece of Your Mind
Clients on the receiving end of medical care who share their stories can help providers to be more aware of them and their experiences. If we (the caregivers) are really listening, stories can enlighten us. The patient narratives can leave lasting impressions on who we become as caregivers and how we serve our fellow man.

In the text area, write two paragraphs total (about 150-200 words total) with your thoughts on these questions. It’s a good idea to write your paragraphs in Word or Pages on your computer, saving, and then pasting into the course, so there’s no chance you’ll lose your work.
How did this list (or statement or poem) make you feel when you read it? Did you find this format to be an effective (and perhaps even an artful) way of getting his points and feelings across? Why or why not?
What does the author mean at the end when he says, “When you come into my room, promise me presence?” Can you think of examples from your own experience as a patient when you didn’t feel like you had the healthcare professional’s full presence? How does that feel for you as a patient?

1 typo. Get in the habit of using spell & grammar check for college-level writing. Personally, I am a poor typist and need to autocheck everything I write. For instance, I tend to reverse g and n in words ending with “-ing”. It’s annoyign when I don’t catch this typ.! If you catch me makign a typo in announcements or assignments (other than in this rubric where I’m doing it on purpose as an example), message me through Carmen and I’ll waive 1 such error for you for every 1 of mine you catch so I can fix it! You might be surprised how this adds up given my lack of touch-typing skill…
