Mario is a 16-year-old transgender student. Mario’s family recently moved from California to Louisiana due to his mother receiving a job offer in the medical field. Mario is supportive of his mother’s new job, but he also misses his friends and the sense of security and safety he felt in California. Although he has not experienced overt discrimination or bullying at his new school, he has often been met with whispers and stares by other students. Mario’s mother has noticed that he has become withdrawn and quiet at home, and that he often stays in his room during dinner. When he is not in his room, he often seems like he is holding back tears when asked questions about school. His teachers report that he turns in his work on time, and never acts out in class, but that he sits in the back of the room and never participates in discussions unless he is directly called upon. He eats lunch alone every day, often seeking out an isolated corner or empty table to sit at. He declined to try out for the school play, even though theatre was his favorite extracurricular activity in California. Mario’s mother has reached out to you, the school social worker, to see how you can help.
