Part 2: Early Childhood Educator Interview and Reflection (See Appendix B for Questions)
Interview Preparation
Imagine an interview with a teacher, director, or family support person from the childcare program in which the family has a child enrolled.
Review  the practitioner interview questions found in Appendix B (attached below).  You will be typing up the practitioner’s responses
Be sure to let the practitioner know that you are completing this interview as a course assignment, and that the purpose of the assignment is to identify family engagement policies and practices within early childhood programs.
Ensure the practitioner that this interview is for educational purposes only and is completely confidential: names will be replaced with initials and any other identifying information will be removed.
Let the questions guide your interview but encourage the practitioner to share anything about their program that they feel is pertinent, even if it is not specifically mentioned in the interview questions.
If the practitioner provides minimal information, follow-up the original question with more open-ended prompts, such as “Tell me more about that,” or “If you don’t have this in place, what would you like to do?”
Post Interview Reflection: Reflect on what you have learned from this interview.  Answer each of the questions below. Be sure to explain both the strengths and the challenges.  Use quotations from your interview to support your statements.
What do you see as this educator’s strengths and areas for growth in terms of family engagement?
What did you see as this educator’s strengths in terms of communication and collaboration?
Describe this educator’s family engagement strategies.
Based on the interview, describe this educator’s responsiveness in terms of cultural, linguistic and ability diversity.
What practices does this educator use to gain information about children via families, and how is this information used within the program?
