Video Summaries and Critiques
 
           
 
Students will select two online videos reflecting either (a) individual school counseling sessions with students or (b) individual clinical counseling sessions with youth of school age.  The videos must have been posted within the last five years and be at least 20 minutes in length. 
 
Students will write two (2) four – five-page summaries of the videos and with critiques of the counseling sessions – and especially – the interpersonal, communication, and helping skills demonstrated by the school counselors or counselors.  The video titles, the dates on which they were posted, the names of the school counselors or counselors (if possible), and whether the videos are within video channels to which one can subscribe must be provided.
 
A discussion/conclusion section including student reflection, analysis, and critique is required for both summaries/critiques. A manageable way to approach this section of the assignments is to think in terms of a Venn diagram: Thesis (video content, and especially that of specific to the school counselors’ or counselors’ interpersonal, communication, and helping skills) contrasted and compared to antithesis (student’s knowledge, including research-based knowledge and practical/professional experience) and then synthesis.
The papers must be APA-formatted (i.e., title page, four to five pages of text, and references page [no Abstract required]) and word processed, spell-checked, proof-read, and edited prior to submission.  Considerations for grading include: What were the student’s observations, reactions, and thoughts about the interpersonal, communication, and helping skills of the school counselors, counselors, and about the videos, overall?  What were the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the school counselors, counselors, and videos? Were the videos summarized in a concise way? Were the videos written about with clarity of expression? Was there accurate grammar and spelling?
