1. Stereotypes are woven into numerous parts of our cultural history. Give an example of a stereotype you have observed in a comedy film, cartoon or television show. What theory or theories of humor are seen in the example? How does your example relate to ethics and status or power?
2. In Unit 4, we discussed the positive and negative ethics of humor, and its virtues. Give an example of a stereotype in humor and identify negative ethics mentioned in Morreall’s text. In what category of humor would Claessens & Dhoest put this example?
3. The lecture and the brief videos posted in this unit include examples of stereotypes in vintage cartoons and other historic pop-culture vehicles. Choose one of these and analyze the positive or negative ethics of humor in it, the use of stereotypes and compare it to what is acceptable in today’s society.
4. What ramifications do you see on the use of cartoons as propaganda tools prior to and during WWII? How would that go over in today’s society? What changes in the past few decades might influence the acceptance of those cartoons?
5. Whoopie Goldberg states (in the video shown in our lecture) states that stereotypes in early cartoons were “wrong then,” and are still wrong. If that is the case, what value do you see in airing them in today’s culture and society? What negative factors do you see in airing these stereotypical images?
