Your final essay may regard any topic you are interested in relating to any of the works we’ve discussed this semester. You may explore one of the ideas brought up in class (such as responding to a discussion question) or may bring in concepts from your major. You may also conduct an analysis of certain themes or ideas present in multiple works. Regardless of what you choose, your work should include:
An argumentative framework (the paper should be arguing for or against something).
A clear, nuanced thesis statement.
Close reading of the work.
Three academic sources mentioned in the paper and properly cited in a Works Cited page.

Throughout the semester, we have discussed the many ways in which the works we’ve read explored the idea of duty and responsibility. By conducting a thorough close reading of any of the works we’ve read, create an argument for or against one of the arguments regarding responsibility presented in the work. Ensure you are exploring the literary choices made by the author and whether or not you find them convincing.
Many of the works we’ve read throughout the semester explore overlapping themes. Each work presents these themes in different contexts and for different goals. Pick two works with overlapping themes and conduct a close reading of how these themes appear in each work. Craft an argument based on this exploration; does reading the two works together deepen our understanding of the theme? Are they at odds in their presentation of the theme, and one is more convincing than the other? Most importantly, why compare these works and how should we read/understand them in comparison? Etc.
In each of the works we’ve read, point of view is a highly important choice. Every work’s the point of view is presented deliberately. Choose a work and explore this important decision. Why include Vonnegut’s perspective in Slaughterhouse Five? Why tell the story from Merrikat’s perspective in We Have Always Lived in the Castle? Etc. Utilizing close reading, craft an argument regarding the work’s choice of perspective.
