Step 1: Locate the CFI interview in your DSM (in the Culture and Psychiatric Diagnosis chapter)
Step 2: use a mock role-play scenario. For this assignment, assume there will be a person coming to a first appointment for mental health concerns, and you will be the clinician doing the CFI. You are NOT diagnosing this person’s symptoms; you are practicing gathering cultural information about the person.
Step 3: Once you have completed the interview role play, craft a professional memo that you could send to the APA that would help them improve the CFI in the next version of the DSM. Be sure that your memo includes the following:
Your experience with using the CFI (was it easy to use as a clinician, did your “client” seem to respond well to the questions (1-2 paragraphs) (2 points)
Strengths assessment (what did you like, what does this interview tool do well) (1-2 paragraphs) (2 points)
Areas for improvement (e.g., were there topics of culture and diversity that the CFI missed or didn’t go into enough depth on). Do not state that there are no areas for improvement. (1-2 paragraphs) (2 points)
