Using either the topic of racial or gender equality, write a 1-2 page rhetorical analysis comparing two of the four speeches that were assigned for the day
i.e. you can compare “I Have a Dream” and “Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Speech” OR you can compare “Ain’t I a Woman” and “Gender Equality”.
“Ain’t I a Woman” was originally a speech given by Sojourner Truth in 1851; the TEDTalk is a contemporary performance of it.
In the analysis:
You should compare and contrast the rhetorical situation: this means indicating the purpose of each source and noting how the audience differs for them. Your analysis should draw a conclusion (i.e. make a claim) about the speeches.
You should note the use of ethos, pathos, or logos in each source and compare.
You should bring up any rhetorical devices that are utilized and demonstrate their function to the source’s overall argument.
You will need to have clear topic sentences that show the reader how the following paragraph will deconstruct the effectiveness of the rhetorical devices.
You will need to offer evidence from the texts by summarizing, paraphrasing, and/or quoting.
You must follow your evidence up with your own commentary that explains how the evidence you just gave (the rhetorical elements) is effective in moving the author’s intended audience closer to achieving whatever purpose the author has in mind.
