. This week, through your assigned textbook reading (see syllabus), you discovered that a research study is only as good as the measures used to capture the study variables of interest. For example, if you want to do research on stress, your ability to operationalize (i.e.,conceptualize/define) stress and to find a reliable way to capture what you define as stress is imperative! This is not an easy task especially when working with psychological variables.
(1) Consider the variables you identified in the hypothesis you presented last week. Looking to the research, identify TWO potential ways for you to capture one of the variables of interest (i.e., choose either the predictor or outcome variable) – be sure that one of the two measurement options you identify is a survey instrument using a likert scale. Reflect on these TWO instruments in terms of your subjective assessment of the construct validity of the instruments. Be sure to discuss your perception of both the face validity and content validity of the instruments. Do the instruments have adequate face validity? content validity? Why or why not?
Next, go to the literature and report on the internal consistency reliability of the use of the likert scale instrument you selected as reported in a past study. This information should be located in the methods section of the research article when the measures/surveys are discussed. Identify the reported cronbach alpha reliability score reported in the paper. What does this score tell you about the internal consistency reliability of the measure in this particular study? If you have any difficulty with this task, please reach out to me via email and I can provide assistance.
(3) What is the relationship between reliability and validity? Why is it possible to have a reliable measure that is not valid but impossible to have a valid measure that is not reliable
