For your Module 6 essay, drawing at least on most of the assigned readings, answer the following questions:
What role did gender play in shaping the French colonial empire? How have issues related to gender remained central to post-colonial France? Although students are not expected to discuss readings or themes from other earlier modules, in considering these questions, students might nevertheless think about how these questions about gender have intersected with insecurities about race and/or the meaning of Frenchness (or French identify) and to what extent this intersectionality has been a perennial issue in the history of French colonialism and imperialism.
Note: You can incorporate material from earlier modules, but if you do the emphasis should be placed on the readings assigned for module 6.
This essay is an opportunity to show that you read the assigned material(s) and can inter-relate their contents. You are expected to draw connections between different readings and see how their issues overlap and influence each other. I don’t expect you to be experts in French colonial and imperial history. While factual accuracy is important, so is your essay’s engagement with the themes and readings of this module. If you have any questions of fact or interpretation, please get in touch.
