Unit 1.2 DB: Therapeutic Forces
Sasha is a first-year school counselor at the local college. She has been leading a group that is not going well. The group is made up of 12 students who are required to attend because they are planning to drop out of school at the end of the semester. Sasha has been meeting with all 12 students in one group and working hard to get these students to rethink their plan to drop out. Sasha is frustrated for several reasons. At times, some members appear to listen while others seem bored. Sasha is not sure what kind of topics she should bring up. When she creates a plan, she finds it difficult to stick to it because some members seem so unmotivated. Sasha feels like a failure, and in her supervision session, Sasha realizes she has a problem with several of the therapeutic forces. What should Sasha do about the size of the group and why? What issues does Sasha have with the purpose of the group and why? Discuss the anti-therapeutic forces with which Sasha is dealing.
