Topic: Acid/Base Equilibrium in the Body
As discussed in the previous unit, pH imbalances have a dramatic effect on our environments and ecosystems, especially our water sources. Have you ever considered just how impactful these pH imbalances can be on the human body and the chemistry occurring to maintain our daily functions? You might think that pH is something you would want to maintain as neutral as possible, but in actuality there are many functions in the human body that require either a lower or higher pH. Do some research on a biofunction in the human body that requires a pH other than neutral (7.0) and answer the following questions.
Initial Response:
Pick one area in the body where the pH is not neutral. Where is it (e.g., digestive system, endocrine system, circulatory system)?
What is the area’s pH? How does this lower or higher pH affect that area?
What do you think may happen in the short and long term if the pH equilibrium is disrupted by diet, lifestyle, or illness?
