This week, you get to play Anthropologist. Consider your company (NASA Johnson Space Center Mission Control Operations or a former employer – Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, PA) as an outsider might see it. What artifacts do you notice? If you are fully remote, then note things such as how your colleagues dress in Zoom/Teams meetings, whether they use fake backgrounds or you get a glimpse into their kitchens, how quickly people respond to emails, or whether you use Slack or even text to communicate most frequently. Also think about the values, particularly the values in use and any assumptions you can identify. Where would you put the company on the competing values matrix (Figure 11.2). How would you describe the culture of your company? How strong or weak is it? How many subcultures are there, or are there too many to count? What assumptions do employees make? What are the norms and routines of the company? If you were an anthropologist, how would you describe the company? Have fun with this!
