This is the Extra Credit associated with the scientific article which was posted to d2L some time back. This assignment is part of trying to figure out the best way of incorporating scientific thinking into this course. Recently, Human Anatomy was designated as a Goal 3 course within the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum. Goal 3 is Natural Sciences, and one of the Goal 3 outcomes has to do with interpreting scientific writing. So that is what this assignment is about, and why it is extra credit. I just want to see what you are able to do.
Background: Scientific articles come in three variations – 1) Research articles, which detail specific experimental procedures and test a hypothesis, and are typically written as an introduction, methods, results and conclusion. The hypothesis is generally stated in the introduction, and references are included for the basis of why the experimental method answers the question(s), and for why the results either support or refute the hypothesis;
2) Review articles, which take a question or questions, sometimes in a narrow focus, sometimes broader, and review a large body of published evidence in the process of answering the question(s) or determining where future research should be directed. There are no experimental outcomes in a review article. These articles typically include a large number of references, because the goal is to explore all pertinent published evidence on the topic(s) in question. Review articles typically have an introduction, where the purpose of the paper is stated, and then the remainder of the article is divided into topic sections.
3) Commentary articles, which generally take a recent published article, maybe several, and evaluate the outcomes as they pertain to the generally accepted line of thinking in that scientific discipline. Often these commentary articles discuss topics for which there are two to several competing lines of thinking. If references are used, they are typically few.
Assignment: There are three facets of this assignment:
Identify which type of article this is. The article was previously posted in Content, and it is also attached to this Assignment Folder.
Describe, in one sentence, the overall, over-arching goal of this article. It is not the exact same thing as the title.
Identify parts of the article which reference topics we’ve covered in this course. This will look different for each of you. One suggestion is to read through the article one sentence at a time, and determine if that sentence is describing something relevant to this course. If it is, identify it as such.
