This assessment item requires you to carry out two observations on one child aged up to five years engaged in solitary or group play, with or without adult participation. These observations will be used to complete two templates that document, assess and communicate the child’s learning – one mathematics-focused and one science-focused. These two templates form the assessable component of this task and can be found in the Interact2 Subject Site via the ‘Assessment 2’ left-hand menu tab.
Here is what you need to do to complete this task:
1. Choose one child (aged up to five years) to focus on for this task, and carry out two observations of the child engaged in their own naturalistic, self-directed solitary or group play, with or without adult participation. These observations should be recorded by any method approved within the setting (e.g. photographs, video, anecdotal records). Before you observe the child, you must gain permission from the parents/guardians. An Information Sheet and Consent form are provided on the Interact2 Subject Site. NOTE: You do not need to submit your observations. They simply need to be done in order to complete the assessable component (the two templates).
2. Use one of the observations to complete the mathematics-focused template that you will find in the Assessment 2 section on the Interact2 Subject Site; AND, use the other observation to complete the science-focused template that you will also find in the Assessment 2 section on the Interact2 Subject Site.
COVID-19 CLAUSE:  If you are unable to observe a child due to COVID-19 restrictions, then please use the videos that are provided in the ‘Assessment 2’ section of the Interact2 Subject Site. Two videos have been provided: one for the mathematics-focused template; and, one for the science-focused template.
3. Complete the two templates. Each template should be no more than 1000 words and must be written in an academic manner, using appropriate literature. However, the final section of each template is directed towards the parents/guardians and the child (see points 6 & 7 below), and these should be written in a more “friendly” manner. This will give you practice in communicating children’s learning to different people.
Each template has 7 sections that must be completed:
Section 1. The context of the play-based observation: In this section you provide contextual information such as information about the child, the setting, the activity, other participants, and specific examples of the child’s actions, verbal and non-verbal language, and interactions with others. If you use the videos that have been provided in the ‘Assessment 2’ section of the Interact2 Subject Site to complete the assessment then in the Context for the play-based observations section you need to include the following information:
State that you have used the videos.
Explain why you have used the videos and provide a description of where you usually work and your position there.
Include the name of the videos and provide correct in-text citations (provided on the Interact2 Subject Site).
Include a reference for each video in your Reference List (provided on the Interact2 Subject Site).
Section 2. The mathematical/scientific learning processes evident in the child’s play: In this section you discuss the mathematical/science learning processes that you observed in the child’s play. You must refer to Bishop’s mathematical activities in the mathematics-focused template and the 5Es science model in the science-focused template.
Section 3. The child’s use of technology and how that technology supported the child’s use of the mathematical/science learning processes. In this section, you identify what technology the child has used and how that technology (or technologies) have supported the child’s use of Bishop’s mathematical activities (in the mathematics-focused template) and the 5Es (in the science-focused template).
Section 4. How the physical and social environment has supported the child in their learning, including how any adults or peers involved in the play influenced the child’s learning.
Section 5. The child’s use of the Bishop’s mathematical activities/the 5Es in relation to one EYLF Learning Outcome and how this might be extended.  In this section, you discuss how the child’s use of the Bishop’s mathematical activities/the 5Es relate to one EYLF Learning Outcome. You should also provide examples that support the connection you are making. In this section, it is also important to include an example of how you might extend the child’s use of the Bishop’s mathematical activities/the 5Es in relation to your chosen learning outcome. Please note that you must use the updated version (Version 2) of the EYLF. A weblink to the EYLF Version 2 will be provided in the ‘Assessment 2’ section on the Interact2 Subject Site.
Section 6. A paragraph to the parents/guardians explaining the Bishop’s mathematical activities/the 5Es that you observed their child using, and ideas of what parents/guardians could do at home to support their child to further develop these learning processes.
Section 7. A paragraph to the child providing feedback to them about their use of Bishop’s mathematical activities/the 5Es.
Submit the following:
The two templates;
One reference list (that includes all sources used in the two templates).
You do not need to submit your observations or your consent form. However, please keep your consent form somewhere safe as you may need to show it to the Subject Coordinator. Please submit your two templates and reference list as one Word document.
