PLEASE FOLLOW THE WRITING GUIDELINES
Writing Guidelines:
1. Have a clear and explicit thesis to your paper. Your reader should be able to identify your thesis
easily. Your thesis should be informative. It should tell your reader the most important point of your
paper.
Examples:
Bad: “Descartes made some good arguments in support of substance dualism.”
Better: “The main thesis of this paper is that Descartes’ substance dualism is correct.”
Best: “The main thesis of this paper is that Descartes’ substance dualism is correct because it is based
on the undeniable insight that the mind is not an extended substance.”
2. Immediately after your thesis, tell your reader how you will support your thesis. Offer a plan or an
outline for your paper and then stick to it.
Examples:
Bad: “Now let us consider some of Descartes’ writings.”
Better: “I am going to support my thesis by making two main points and then dealing with a common
objection to substance dualism. The first main point is that the mind is not an extended substance due
to the abstract nature of mental states. The second main point is that substance dualism is the only way
to confirm the existence of both extended bodies and unextended minds. Finally, I will discuss the
objection to substance dualism that it leaves it mysterious how minds interact with bodies. My reply to
this objection is that it misunderstands Descartes’ stated position.”
3. Make strong and convincing claims. Do not begin sentences in ways that undermine the force of
your point, such as “I believe that . . .” or “In my opinion . . .”
4. References and plagiarism: You are only required to use at least one of the texts from the syllabus.
You may use outside references, but if you do, you must cite them appropriately. I am not picky about
the style of citation that you use,
