The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) is one of the most frequently used instruments in conflict management. The TKI assesses an individual’s “preferred” behavior in conflict situations—that is, situations in which the concerns of two people appear to be incompatible. In conflict situations, a person’s behavior can be described along two basic dimensions: (1) assertiveness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns, and (2) cooperativeness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy the other person’s concerns.
For this assignment, you will complete your own conflict style profile using the TKI and reflect on how your preferred conflict mode impacts how you communicate with others.
Step 1: Purchase and complete the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode Instrument which is
available here:
https://shop.themyersbriggs.com/en/tkiitems.aspx?ic=4813
(NOTE: If you have already completed this instrument for another class, you can use your existing report. If this is the first time you have completed the instrument, make sure you save your report, as you will be using it again in future coursework).
Step 2: Write a 3 – 4 page (Double-spaced 12 pt font) reflection, including responses to the following:
What is your conflict style? Provide both the summary details from your assessment as well as describing your own words (i.e. not copied from the website) what this style involves (i.e. how would YOU describe someone with your preferred conflict style?)
Share a brief story or give an example from your past experiences that illustrate how this style impacted how you communicated with others in a particular situation.
In what types of situations is your preferred conflict mode supportive of effective communications and what situations might you need to lean into other modes to help support effective communications?
How can you use your knowledge of conflict modes to improve your communications with others in future conflict situations?
