The Research Paper Prospectus writing assignment is very important and is the start of the larger final research paper. Provide a preliminary research paper title. No cover pages are required.
The Prospectus will contain:
1. An introduction with necessary historical context (background) and the importance of the topic. In the introduction, cite three different academic sources (please note that for the introduction, these must be books). Remember, citations are not synonymous with quotations. In academic writing it is important to cite when:
(1. Paraphrasing, 2. Referencing a text, 3. Synthesizing information, 4. Analyzing, 5. Comparing readings, 6. Assessing information, 7. Using a quotation. )
2. A research question at the end of the introduction. This question must be open-ended and research based. It should begin to build an argument answered in part by the thesis statement.
3. A thesis statement paragraph that responds to the research question. It is important to set up the thesis statement with additional historical content. This is necessary when setting up an argument. Please note that it is necessary to also cite sources in the thesis statement paragraph.
4. Analysis and argumentation in support of the thesis statement. It is important to write a minimum of four-to-six (4-6) strong, evidence-based paragraphs in support of the thesis statement. In these supportive paragraphs, cite a minimum of three times in the in-text citation form.
5. Do not conclude. The paper is not finished yet; rather, provide a “road map”–which is an analytical discussion of what will follow next. Explain what the final research paper version will look like and what sources are needed to finish the paper. In this “road map” you will begin to develop a plausible counterargument and explain how you will refute it.
6. Provide a Works Cited page. (Total sources cited for the Prospectus= 8). Four academic books, two academic journal articles, and two primary sources.
Special note: It is important to write the Research Paper Prospectus Draft in the MLA format (Modern Language Association). Please refer to the Purdue OWL MLA guidelines. They have updated the 8th to the 9th Edition of MLA recently.
Every paragraph will contain numerous in-text citations in parentheses. These are also referred to as in-text parenthetical citations, ex: (Samuels 233), (Armesto 120). Both of these citations contain the last names of the authors referenced and the page numbers consulted.
