The purpose of this paper is to put a human face (possibly one that you recognize) on a major historical event, movement, or theme from World History. The paper is NOT a biography about the individual, but an analysis of the historical events happening around them. Think of it as a video game: your ancestor is your avatar, dropped into the game, and you are witnessing a historical event (19th-century immigration/ World War I/the Industrial Revolution/etc) through their eyes. Your ancestor did not have to leave the United States to have been caught up in global events. If you have a question about what would qualify, speak to Dr. Tapscott.
CHOOSE: A story from your own family history.
• The story must be from your grandparents’ generation or before. You do not have to know
or even speak to the person you are writing about. Both could be difficult if your person is no
longer with us.
• You need at least ONE PHYSICAL PRIMARY SOURCE related to that story:
A letter, a diary, a photograph, a newspaper article, a military service record or medal, an
official document (like a passport), a family heirloom (object), etc.
• Carefully scan or photograph the primary source: do not bring the original to campus!
• Attach a scan or a photo of the primary source to the end of the paper. This does not count
towards the required page limit
If you are unable to obtain a primary source, please see Dr Tapscott by March 16th for an alternative source.
RESEARCH: Using resources available through the college library, research how your person’s story fits into what we have been studying in class.
• You must use at least 2 academic books (peer-reviewed from a university press, no older than 1980) from the library and 1 scholarly article (from an online journal database available from the library’s website, no older than 1990).
• NO WEBSITES (apart from journals and ebooks through the Library)
• You are also allowed to use any materials from class, although these do not count towards
your required 2 books and 1 article.
Use the books World War II in the central pacific by Sharon Tosi Lacey 1968 and American flyers in World War II by Jerome Klinekowitz
Use the article The U.S Army and Amphibious Warfare During World War II
