The paper will focus on the theological understanding of black experience in the work of black liberation theologian, James Cone, and womanist theologian, Delores Williams. We will look at two dimensions of black experience in the work of Cone and Williams: (a) the nature of black experience and (b) how it functions methodologically (e.g., as an authoritative source) for their respective theologies. In light of the similarities and differences in Cone’s and Williams’s theological understanding and use of black experience, and the theological logic behind those differences and similarities, the student will reflect constructively on their own emerging theological understanding of black experience and how it might inform their approach to the ministry contexts specific to their vocational call and vision.
