The following short stories all come from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and are all mentioned in Franco Moretti’s evolutionary tree of clues in Victorian detective fiction (Week 10’s reading, p. 73/Figure 30). Your assignment is EITHER:
–to select any two stories and to compare/contrast them using both literary analysis and mathematical modeling. If you are tracking clues, you should definitely pick one story that figures on Moretti’s + side of his evolutionary tree (See Week 10, Moretti reading, p. 73, figure 30), and one from the – side of his evolutionary tree. If you aren’t tracking clues, it’s less important which two you pick. You are free to stick to Moretti’s discussion and track clues, but remember all the other ways we have thought about stories in quantitative terms (counting, statistical graphs/tables, probability models, and networks).
