Take 2: Sociological TAKE on a Topic
SOCY 101 Spring 2024
Due Date: Thursday April 24, 2024
A Take is a person’s interpretation, way of seeing and understanding, something. In the West we might say “What’s your take on….?” meaning “what do you think about…?”. In this assignment, you are being asked to provide your thoughts on something but thoughts that are not just personal opinion, they are informed by sociological concepts and theory. This assignment does not require any addition reading other than what is outlined below. The main point is for you to reflect about something as seen through a sociological lens, and share your reflections (analysis) in a short 2-3 pages (1.5 spacing) paper. When you have finished the assignment, upload it into Canvas. I will grade it and upload your grades before next Sunday.
The Assignment: you have 3 choices for this assignment.
Choice 1: read the section ‘Sociological Theories of Education’ on pages 618-622 in your text. Using sociological concepts/theories from your text and your own personal reflections, write a 2-3 pages (1.5 spacing) discussion of your experience with university.
Choice 2: read the section ‘Modern Theoretical Approaches’ on pages 19-25 in your text. Using sociological concepts/theories from your text and your own personal reflections, write a 2-3 pages (1.5 spacing) discussion of something you have experienced as a woman in Qatar.
Choice 3: read the section ‘What is Sociology’ on pages 3-6 in your text and watch the short video below. Using the Sociological Imagination and your own personal reflections, write a 2-3 pages (1.5 spacing) discussion of something you have personally experienced this semester. This can be something you’ve experienced on campus or off campus.

The Topic
Provide a description of the topic/event/experience you intend to analyze in the Take.
There must be enough detail so that you have something to work with, analyze.
The Analysis
Once you have described the topic of analysis, give me your take on it as seen through a sociological lens. In other words, analyze your topic using the sociological theory and concepts you have chosen.
Be sure to include your personal reflections and opinions too, and they don’t have to match what the theory says. You are free to agree or disagree, but either way, you must explain what you agree/disagree with and why. What do you base this opinion on?
