Paragraph Outline
1.     Introduction ending with a thesis:
In
Isabelle Gill essay “Representation of Disney princesses in the Media” she
describes how words such as “wee Lass” or “sweet, kind and flirty” are commonly
used when describing a woman. She feels that princesses’ physical looks can
weaken their character and portray them in a sexual manner. She conducts research
and observes the reviews of these Disney films. Isabelle Gill argues the
stereotypical views of feminine nature on films or social media and how it may
affect children as they grow older.
2.     Summary Sentence:
Isabelle
Gill explains how social media has a powerful influence on how society views
men and woman. She compares films and how society tends to weaken the image of
woman and describe them in a feminism aspect instead of powerful or brave.
Isabelle utilizes examples from different Disney films and analyzes each
critique. She believes that examining children’s perceptions of Disney
princesses at different age levels can help determine future research between
adults and whether they are likely to subscribe to these portrayals than the
children themselves.
3.     Introduction of author’s evidence
Isabelle
conducts analysis and Disney films reviews and observes the critiques and
patterns regarding the reviews. She first takes the films from each Disney
movie and then records the reviews from viewers. In the reviews viewers
describe how different the princesses from each film look, dress or even how
they conduct themselves. Despite the reviews it shows that these films do not
portray the princesses to qualify as role models. It shows that the Disney
princess films are more worried about their physical appearance than anything
else.
4.     Introduction of author’s writing
strategy
Isabelle
Gill utilizes cause and effect and comparison and contrast in her essay.
Isabelle explains because social media is immensely powerful it can lead to
children influence. She explains that because princesses are so big in the
Disney films it can have a vital effect on young girls. It should be considered
and recognized how much media influence can have such an impact on young
children, especially young girls. Compare and contrast are also utilized as she
explains how the films have changed throughout the years. We can compare the
princesses and reviews shown on the chart she uses to observe each review that
is annotated.
5.     Introduction of why you agree or
disagree
I
believe Isabelle Gill is valid in her argument when regarding how social media
and films portray woman in such a one-way feminine aspect. As a woman that was
in the military, we are always viewed as we are not able to keep up or be as
strong as men. Women tend to always must be kind or pretty or as society says,
“needs to stay in the kitchen.” As a parent to a daughter, I do not want my
daughter to have to live by what society thinks woman should look like or how
they are supposed to conduct themselves. I can agree that Disney portrays woman
as weak or constantly seeking the acceptance of men.
6.     Introduce a source from the library
that supports your views
Although
everyone loves Disney, they tend to portray the princesses as “damsels in
distress” says Jennifer Joe. Isabelle Gill explains how Disney influences
internal biases or prejudices against princesses. In a journal named “Recasting
the different princesses” By Jennifer Joe she talks about how Disney brands
itself on social media and how it can influence young viewers. She includes
different examples of Disney films and states that Disney is now paying
attention and aware of how they speak about representations, sexual
orientation, and racism regarding their movies. This supports Isabelle Gill argument
regarding how much influence it can have on young viewers more specifically
young woman.
7.     Describe the author’s audience and
a possible opposing view
Some
men and woman can disagree and feel that the films on princesses can display a
good role model for their children. As the films differentiate from the past,
Disney films grow and become more equal. If you compare Snow white to Elsa from
the movie frozen you can see the difference on how snow white was a woman who
needed a kiss from her prince to come back to life, whereas Elsa did not need a
kiss from a prince instead she needed the love from her own sister. Who is to
say that not all society agrees that woman is not being recognized and that
society is continuing to oppress woman in today’s films.
8.     Conclusion (summarize main points
of essays and your response)
Films
and social media can leave a negative effect on gendered roles, and it is our
job as parents to further demonstrate that it is not what defines us. It does
not just take the internet to help and make your children feel powered, but I
believe as parents it is our job to instill greatness into our children so that
social media does not take such an influence on their young souls. Social media
changes every day and can make a powerful impact on society in an instant as
well as movies and tv shows. I think that Disney films should take
consideration of the reviews the viewers are making and how much it can influence
the children or whoever is watching.
