Write a 4-5 page paper addressing the following question:
What was the S.M. Otieno burial case really about? How should the story be told?
As you will notice, these are the questions that Cohen and Odhiambo asked their colleagues to address in the Afterpiece to Burying S.M. Download Burying S.M.(p. 100). Like them, we have deliberately asked you a vague question because we want you to decide what the case was about, and to offer evidence to support your claims.
In addressing the question you’ll certainly want to use the materials we referenced in our re-enactment of the trial: the scholarly book Burying S.M., Wambui Otieno’s controversial 1998 autobiography Download Wambui Otieno’s controversial 1998 autobiography, and Paul Mboya’s 1938 book on Luo customs Download Paul Mboya’s 1938 book on Luo customs. You may also want to draw on (as appropriate) materials from earlier in the semester. You might, for example, use the trial to unpack the ambiguities around the Mau Mau rebellion, using the material we discussed in Topic 5. You might want to discuss the ways in which ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ figured in this trial, using the material from Topic 4 (about Drum magazine in South Africa) as a point of comparison.
We will reward an essay that uses the course materials carefully and astutely, and that advances a thesis that is developed over the course of the essay.
A piece of advice: we do not want you to re-litigate the trial. We do not want you to answer the question ‘Who was right?’, or ‘Who should have won?’. In this essay you are meant to make an argument about what the case was about, not argue from one side or the other.
Make sure to cite your sources using either footnotes or in-text (parenthetical) notes + bibliography.
There will be a writing workshop focused on the paper in your discussion section on Friday, 29 March. The paper should be submitted on or before Tuesday, 2 April at 10 am.
