Prewriting
Take notes while watching the video. Consider the following questions (this is not a checklist, but should provide some material and ideas to base your paper on):
·      How much do we really think on our own?
·      How much “information” is really just propaganda?
·      How do you feel learning/knowing that the amount of smoking in older films was a type of product placement?
·      Similar to tobacco use in film, what do you think about other unhealthy product placements, such as junk foods, in current film?
·      Should the home be shielded from ads?
·      How different might your life be without ads?
·      Do ads market products and services that you already want, or do the ads dictate which products and services you want?
Address the following question in your response:
·      Research consumer groups and targeted advertising. What consumer groups do you think you personally would belong to? Take note of the advertising you see while watching television, listening to the radio, and/or browsing the internet. Compare this to more general advertising in magazines and billboards, etc.
Writing
Write a 5-page paper responding to the essay, referring to the Prewriting questions. You may use any or all of the above questions in the response. You may comment on other things not mentioned above. Recall that Rogerian structure includes contexts in which the opponent’s viewpoint may be correct as well as benefits to the opponent sections. If you are arguing that ads are bad, then the opposing viewpoint would be that ads are good.
All essays must answer the targeted advertising question.
Works Cited
Cite any sources (not counting the Wisecrack video) that you referred to when writing the essay, both in-text and on a separate works cited page.
The works cited is part of the essay document (not a separate file) that lists full citations of all sources used in the essay. It does not count toward the essay’s page count for length. The works cited entries generally follow this format**:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Publication in which Source Appears. Publication Info. Medium.
**Note that this is a general format. Consult a handbook or OWL at Purdue for specific formats.
Also realize that the works cited entries use the hanging indent. This is the opposite of a regular indent used when composing paragraphs.
Works cited entries will be alphabetized by author’s last name and will be formatted the same as the essay, with the exception of the title “Works Cited” (not in quotes) centered.
No extra spacing should be used, and the font should be a consistent Times New Roman 12 throughout.
Organization and Formatting
The essay will be written in Times New Roman size 12 font and will be double-spaced, using 1-inch margins, and otherwise adhering to MLA formatting guidelines. You will cite the sources in MLA format both in-text and on a separate Works Cited page (that does not count toward the 5-page minimum).
