How might the evolving landscape of healthcare delivery, including trends such as telehealth expansion and value-based care models, impact the roles and responsibilities of both Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners?
The current healthcare landscape evolves around technology and presents efficient ways to access healthcare, including telehealth. Improvements of healthcare and expansion of technology have contributed to the growth of telehealth. Telehealth is the use of telecommunications in health care delivery and education (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). Telehealth uses medical education, patient monitoring, and consultation through videoconferencing (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). Along with these technological changes, people who provide healthcare are also changing. We are in a time where there is an increased interest to enter the ongoing practice of Nurse Practitioners (Heale, 2021). Nurse Practitioners can positively impact health care delivery and focus on health maintenance and promotion (Heale, 2021).
With evolving technology there are expansions of health care resources. Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners are able to practice in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, and outpatient offices. APRNs provide direct patient care and contribute to evidence-based practice (Haleem et al., 2021). Increasing demand for healthcare has contributed to the creation of telehealth. Health trends like this allow for APRNs to see more patients in less time and improve patient outcomes (Haleem et al., 2021). Additionally, this evolving landscape of healthcare delivery allows for APRNs to work from anywhere. The flexibility of online healthcare is beneficial for the provider and the patients. Health applications can also be used for patients to schedule follow up appointments and improves probability of follow ups and consultations (Haleem et al., 2021). This allows APRNs to communicate with other specialists and providers, promoting networking. It is important for both Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners to be part of this process by educating patients and communicating with other providers to give patients access to the best care possible.
