REFLECTION PAPER
TOPIC – The role of rhetoric in our understanding of COVID-19
Based on the lecture on the rhetoric of science, and all the course content so far regarding the importance of rhetoric in shaping social attitudes, analyze in a written paper how rhetoric has shaped current attitudes, beliefs and policies about COVID-19.
This is a broad topic. You may address how, for example, how parents on social media share opinions on vaccines; how legislators, former presidents, and celebrities politicized mask wearing; how the Center for Disease Control covered the lifting of mask ordinances in May 2021 but reinstated them (on recommendation) that July; how the media in your home country covered the virus.
To be clear: I am uninterested in your political views. If you share your opinions on Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Anthony Fauci, etc., I will stop reading. Analyze the rhetoric; don’t judge the actors.
In the PROPOSAL I expect to see:
1. A thesis. For example: “Jimmy Kimmel and other late night comedian combine Ciceronian appeals to the common man and Lord Kames’ concept of taste when discussing vaccine hesitancy among Americans.”
2. THREE examples of COVID-19-related rhetoric you’ll analyze. You may use speeches, scientific presentations, press conferences, social media coverage, and so on. If in doubt, ask me.
– You must use reputable sources. Citing Reddit or QAnon material works only as examples of these media distributing false information.
3. THREE rhetorical prisms through which you’ll analyze these examples. You may use any theory or philosopher we have studied in Herrick’s chapters on Greek, Roman, Middle Ages, and Enlightenment rhetoric. You can use Aristotle’s rhetorical pyramid (i.e. ethos, pathos, and logos) only as supplemental material. I need to see ideas drawn from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Enlightenment.
– What conclusions will you draw?
