Read each question carefully to make sure what you are asked to do. The goal is to demonstrate your understanding of the course materials and your ability to express your own views on the issues they raise. This requires, at a minimum, that you explain all key concepts and reconstruct in some detail the relevant philosophical arguments we examined. Please consult the grade rubric in the syllabus for guidance about what is required for each grade range.
Your answer should be as concise as possible but as long as it needs to be to fully explain the philosophical position under discussion and offer your interpretation of that position. I estimate that you cannot accomplish this in fewer than 750 words per answer.
Each answer is worth 10 points, except for a bonus question worth 5 points.
Both Thomas Hobbes and John Locke offer a narrative of progress according to which human beings advance from their natural state to a political condition. How does Rousseau’s narrative differ? How does Rousseau suggest individuals can associate with one another while obeying only themselves and remaining as free as they are in their natural condition?
Carole Pateman argues that the relationship between the United States and Native Americans is governed by a tempered logic of the settler contract. Explain what she means by this and discuss the tempered logic of the settler contract in reference to the Onondaga Nation’s legal challenge to the United States over the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty.
The documentary The 13th explores the United States’ history of racial inequality by focusing on the transformations from slavery to the convict leasing system to Jim Crow segregation and, finally, mass incarceration. How can Charles Mills’ concept of the Racial Contract help us explain this history?
Bonus question (max. 5 pts):
