Prompt Paper 1. Malcolm and Historical Revisionism
The Autobiography of Malcolm X (as told to Alex Haley) is considered a classic work in Black literature. Known for its vivid imagery and clear-eyed, unapologetic discussion of racism in the United States, the autobiography is also a powerful testimony to one’s capacity for resilience and personal transformation.
Autobiographies, in general, can be powerful and persuasive representations of the past. After all, who knows better about their life experiences than those who lived them?   On the other level, however, historical research (using the sources and approaches discussed in this class) may arrive at different conclusions about the past and its significance. Historians sometimes find new sources or ways of interpreting well-known sources and information. Historical research can present arguments that challenge or completely overturn our understanding of past events.
Assignment:
Comparatively, analyze Robin Kelley’s “Riddle of the Zoot.”  In what ways does this essay revise the image of “Detroit Red”  — the street life phase in Malcolm X’s journey, as discussed in the Autobiography of Malcolm X.  Be sure also to examine the sources that Kelley uses to support his argument, as well as new ways of interpreting Malcolm X’s past.
3-4 pages Times Font, double-spaced, Chicago-styled footnotes.
