Please write a paper (5-7 pages, double-spaced) that analyzes both the music and lyrics of one of your favorite songs in any popular music genre (rock, hip-hop, pop, etc.). The song that you choose must NOT have been included in the course listening lists or lectures or covered in great detail in the readings.
Your essay should place this song within the context of one or more of the themes of our course: race, class, gender, technology, the music business and counterculture. In writing about your song’s musical elements, you should also place these musical elements in historical and cultural context by comparing the musical elements to those in songs or genres we have discussed in class or that were mentioned in the readings.
The musical and textual analysis should be your own. You may consult outside sources for background information providing that your sources are properly cited. I will accept any of the major citation formats (APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian) either with footnotes or in-text citations. You should include a full list of works cited at the end of your essay.
