Social-Emotional Learning Skills
A psychoeducational group is a group focused on education that helps members develop needed skills (Gladding, 2020). Psychoeducational groups are often limited on time and only run for a few weeks.
Psychoeducation groups are extremely effective for children and adolescents but are also effective for adults (Gladding, 2020). These groups are often used when one needs social support over psychotherapy.
I would want clients and students attending this group to gain relationship skills as well as emotion regulation skills. Those attending would learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to apply skills in relationships to keep them healthy. Those attending would also learn about emotion regulation and how to accept emotions and move forward.
Some activities include journal writing and playing games. Journal writing would encourage one to explore their emotions and playing games would bring in a social aspect to the group.
I am interested in this topic because I think social-emotional skills are vital in daily life. I expect to encounter a lot of clients needing improvements in these areas. I would like to learn more about this topic so I can be prepared for my future as a counselor. God knew the importance of socializing and that is why he created Eve to be a companion to Adam (Genesis 2:18, KJV).
Kaya & Kaval (2022) conducted a psychoeducation group focused on social skills for elementary school children and found that the children’s social skills improved as a result from the group.
