Phase 1 : For the first stage of the Argumentative/Persuasive Research Essay, the student is to submit a Proposed Thesis and a Proposed Works Cited document. The Proposed Thesis is a thesis statement(s) that outlines the thesis topic, defines the issues that the thesis will address, and explains why the topic warrants further research. The main idea of the thesis is to identify an issue and provide a proposed solution to that issue. The Proposed Works Cited contains the five (5) sources that the student may use in their essay. These sources will contribute to the research essay in providing data, expert analysis, and evidence that furthers the writer’s argument. The citations of these sources need to be placed in alphabetical order by author last name and have a “hanging indent” form. An example Proposed Thesis and Works Cited document can be found on the succeeding pages. Notice that the entire example is in MLA format (proper heading, double spaced, Times New Roman (Serif) font, size 12): Phase 2 : The student will produce a minimum three-page Argumentative/Persuasive Research Essay. This essay should contain a “Works Cited” page (Bibliography page) that contains citations of credible external sources used in the essay. With this, a minimum of five (5) external sources should be used in the essay. These citations should reflect the in-text citations that the student will input into the essay. Students cannot use “dotcom” websites, video sources, or any other source that is not deemed to be academic. Professional sources such as scholarly journals and websites that end in .edu, .org, or .gov are encouraged. It is recommended that sources be found in the following: • LSCO’s database (“GatorSearch”) • Google Scholar • 10 Free Research and Journal Databases (website) Overall, the essay should provide the use of either argumentation and/or persuasion that successfully brings forth a claim (proposed thesis) about an issue. This claimed argument must then be supported by credible sources that forward the essay’s purpose. Prompt: Take a position on a controversial issue and write an argument that makes a narrowly focused arguable claim (thesis), offers logical supporting reasons and evidence that readers will find convincing, appeals to readers’ needs and values, and takes alternative viewpoints (counter argumentation) into consideration. ______________________________________________ The essay must follow MLA guidelines in formatting and style. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in an ungraded essay and a failure for the assignment. Be sure to follow the other requirements listed below: • The essay must use a “formal” tone. This means the student cannot use a first person or second person point-of-view. The student will need to exclude words like “I”, “my”, “me”, “you”, and phrases like “I think that…” or “My opinion is that…” or “You can see that…” This paper should have a universal appeal and using first person and second person limits the perspective of the reader to only the “writer’s point of view”. Yet, the writer may use the word “we” in directing their composition. However, the best method for addressing the reader is to use words in an individual format, such as: “One must consider that. . .” or “The individual can see that. . .” and so on. This structure creates a universal format that any reader can apply to themselves. As an example, a professional news or academic article does not use first person or second person. Instead, they address humanity as a whole and do not stipulate between “me”, “my”, “I”, “you”, etc. • The student must have five (5) legitimate sources for their essay. This means that the student must have at least five (5) in-text citations that help further their argument in the essay. Only professional, academic, and scholarly sources will be allowed. Students cannot use “dotcom” sources, video sources, or any other source that is not deemed academic or scholarly. These sources should be authored as legit sources. • The essay must contain a Works Cited page with the appropriate sources. These citations should reflect the in-text citations that the student will input into the essay • The essay must be double-spaced using complete, clear, and coherent language. It must also be typed in Times New Roman (Serif) with a font size of 12 (MLA format). Requirements in full detail are listed in the documents as well ; topics can be The use of technology in education or the effects of social media on relationships.
