The statistics for wildfires are startling; as of December 7, 2023, 2.61 million acres have been burnt in the United States due to 53,775 fires (NIFC, 2023). In Florida, Hurricane Idalia visited the Big Bend area as a category three storm, the first major hurricane to make landfall in this area. In Florida, disaster preparedness is an annual concern, but for the at-risk or marginal population, there is no ability to prepare in advance, and recovery is challenging.
