• The first assignment is an opportunity for students to research a crime trend in the Greater Toronto Area, within the Province of Ontario. The challenge will be to research a series of crimes that were proven to be linked (either for an active, cold case and/or solved). You will disseminate
the tactical information from your research to determine what information you gathered about the pattern and typology of crime.
• Upon discerning the details, you are expected to discuss how an analyst would have tackled the original crime problem. Referencing the crime analysis
process (collection, collation etc.) will be critical to explain how the pattern was known and where you would have received or requested information
from. You should, in cases where a crime trend was misidentified, or not detected early, explain what mechanisms or typologies about the crime (or
police process) failed to invoke a connection or link.
• Your discussion should also include the mechanisms on how you intend to disseminate the information to commanders. This may include a crime map,
victimology, crime type analysis, bulletins or any other crime analysis technique you see fit to visualize the issue. Finally, if you have chosen a crime
where it was later identified that the police did not initially detect the trend, a discussion should be warranted about what went wrong. This may
include absence or analysis, tunnel vision, lack of evidence or any other processes that inhibited the crime from detection.
