on the topic of your choice. In preparation for that activity, this week you’re learning about effective speeches and creating an outline for the speech you’ll give next week. This gives you an opportunity to figure out what you want to say and get feedback from me before you begin practicing and recording.
Begin by watching the video Principles of Public Speaking—Planning a Speech.
Then prepare and submit an outline of what you plan to say for your persuasive speech. You do not need to do external research unless you’d like to include it.
The outline doesn’t have to be anything fancy. The point is to help you figure out in general what you’re going to say and in what order and to give me a chance to give you suggestions. Below is an overview of the areas you should include in your outline.
Introduction
opening greeting and attention-getter
defining your thesis statement (a summary of what your speech is about)
establishing your credibility
an overview and the benefit to the audience
[Transition between your intro and the first section of the body]
Body Point 1
Topic sentence introducing the idea
Elaborate on the first idea, including through the use of examples and details
transition to the next part of the speech
Repeat this body paragraph pattern as many times as needed
[Transition from the body to the conclusion]
Conclusion
summary of main points
closer or call to action
Here’s an example of what you might submit. Image in the attachment below
Assignment
Prepare and present a 3-5 minute speech in which you persuade the audience to believe as you believe about a certain subject. Then give feedback to peers.
You must present using a recorded video where we can see and hear you. Nonverbal communication and visual effectiveness are included in the grade (see rubric below).
Other than a video of yourself, you do not have to add visual elements like slides in your presentation; it’s often effective but not essential. If you’d like to add visuals, you can use Canvas Studio’s Screen Capture feature, Screencast-o-Matic, or similar tools. But the easiest thing to do is use Harmonizes built-in recording tool.
Tasks
Create an outline of your speech and submit it.
Practice, record, and post your speech to this discussion board.
Watch some of your classmates’ speeches. Leave feedback as a comment for the 2 who posted most recently before you. Your speech must follow the “deluxe sandwich” pattern to earn this portion of the credit. See the attached pdf for feedback guidelines.
If you’re one of the first couple of people who post, you can comment on anyone.
