Now that you have an understanding of the basic features of a good argument as well as general knowledge of common fallacies, you are on your way to properly equipping yourself with the tools to critically evaluate arguments and avoid being manipulated by superficially persuasive sophistry and rhetoric.
For this assignment, you will complete the following:
Select a fallacy that is covered in your module reading, and then identify an example of that fallacy being committed in a newspaper, an online paper, a social media meme, a commercial, or a political campaign speech/commercial. Basically, you will be hunting for fallacies. Rest assured, they are everywhere! Explore different types and sources of information and read with a careful eye, attentive to the common shortcuts people often take.
Directions:
Identify the source of the fallacy (where did you find your fallacy?)
Identify the type of fallacy being committed
Explain why the particular example is guilty of committing the fallacy (describe the fallacy and why this particular example fits that description)
Note: You also have the option to use a fallacy that was not covered in your first reading (Moral Theory at the Movies), but is covered in the book, How to Win Every Argument.
