Management implementing change/technology in the workplace.
improve communication between employees and management.
Leading Change Research Report – Research Project
Effective and technical writing and research skills are critical for leaders and supervisors
to effect change. Each student is required to complete a research paper regarding a topic of
their choice regarding leading a technology based change in the workplace. Students will
develop their topic within the first 1-2 weeks of the semester with the guidance of the instructor.
The topic will leverage research to go in depth into a topic from the textbooks, Leading Change
Reports, and class discussion.
Student will gain knowledge on the topic and then determine how it can be applied to manage
and lead change as well as instigate change to disrupt the status quo in a meaningful and
productive manner – established technologies, markets, society, etc. Additionally, the project
should identify how leaders/leadership lead the change in this area of focus – this could be an
inventor, CEO, an organization, etc.
How technology is utilized to with respect to the topic is also required; this may vary depending
on the topic selected. The topic must be approved by the instructor and relate to the course. The
work must be the students’ own original work. Research papers “recycled” from a previous course
will not be acceptable. I take this assignment seriously so you should.
• Students are strongly encouraged to access The Writing Center at
http://www.uh.edu/writecen/ for assistance with format, style, citations and
organization of their printed materials.
• The paper must be a minimum of 10 pages (double-spaced) in CONTENT length (title
pages, table of contents, works cited pages and appendices do NOT count toward the
page count) and must include:
o Arial or Times New Roman font. with font size of 11 or 12
o Double or single spaced with page numbers
o Cover/Title page
o Table of Contents
o Minimum 10 page body of supporting, cited information
▪ Introduction/Opening statement/Abstract describing the premise of the
paper.

▪ Technical discussion of the specific technology itself and any component
technologies that make up the overall technology platform.
• What is the technology or innovation? Describe it.
• What are the component technologies that comprise the
technology?
▪ Application of Technology or Innovation
• Examples of technology: industrial, commercial, and/or
consumer products?
• How could this technology or innovation be applied other than
what is its original purpose?
• How could the use be expanded?
▪ Leading Change considerations –
• What needs to take place for the technology or innovation
related change to be accepted? Methods? Processes? What
stage of consideration, adoption, or implement is identified?
• Identify leadership requirements for the given situation/scenario.
▪ Other factors and considerations:
• Stakeholder identification and analysis
• How and why is this technology a game-changer and/or
disruptor?
o What was the effect or unintended consequences of the
technology or innovation?
o What space is the technology effecting? – industry,
market, society, etc.
o What were the positive effects? Negative effects?
o Emerging opportunities?
• Financial Considerations $$$ – Revenues/Costs/Profitability
o Development costs – do the costs create barriers to
market entry?
o Cost of the technology – current and project future?
o What is the market in dollars for the technology?
▪ IBISWorld Industry Reports – online through UH
Library.
o What are the current and potential costs of the
technology disruption on external competitors?
• Ethical Considerations – For and Against
• Current issues and future trends related to the topic
▪ Provide a SWO(Risk)T analysis to analyze the issue. Risk = personal
and organizational risk.
▪ Closing summary based on the research. Why does this information
matter to a decision maker? Where is the potential opportunity that has
been identified through the research and analysis?
▪ Students’ perspective on the topic – required.
▪ Works cited page
▪ Appendix: If an interview is conducted, the interview Q&A will be
documented and included in an appendix after the Works Cited.
• Failure to provide a minimum of 10 complete pages of content will result in a
substantial grade reduction. If less than 10 pages are submitted, the maximum point

basis will be reduced proportionately based on number of pages provided. For
example if 9.75 content pages are submitted then the point basis will be reduced to
9.75/8 or 97.5% – the highest score you could earn instead of 100.
• A copy of the research paper must be BOTH submitted on time to Canvas and a
copy emailed to the instructor.
• Works cited:
o A minimum of 8 juried, peer-reviewed sources are required. Peer-
reviewed sources are typically found through the on-line databases available
from the UH-M.D. Anderson Libraries; contact your librarian for assistance as
needed at http://info.lib.uh.edu/help/ask-librarian.
▪ Wikipedia is not an acceptable source in most cases.
▪ Use of the textbook as resource is discouraged.
o Sources should be relevant to the topic and up-to-date.
o Sources for any information included in the presentation must be cited within
the body of the presentation materials and should correspond to a listing on a
Works Cited page.
o Students are also encouraged to gather information from working
professionals; up to two interviews may be used in lieu of up to two of the
required peer-reviewed sources.
▪ Interviews questions must be included as an appendix to the paper
and be cited correctly in the work and listed correctly in the Works
Cited page.
o Students are required to use standardized referencing/footnoting
formats, e.g., Modern Language Association (MLA) or American
Psychological Association (APA).
o Proper use of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation will be a
consideration in grading.
• Research report grading criteria and rubric:
Criteria Item Points
Available
Content: 10 pages: Appropriateness and application of
information to support the premise of the research
paper – did you make your point? Where the areas
outlined in the syllabus addressed?
60
Sources: Used at least 8 peer-reviewed sources, up to
two of which may be substituted with interviews with
industry professionals. Date/age of source should be
considered as research should be “cutting edge” and
most recent. ALL sources listed in Works Cited should be
clearly cited in text.
Non-juried sources (Wikipedia, About.com, other non-
peer reviewed sources) will not be considered to meet
this criteria
