Let’s practice our rhetorical analysis skills on a popular Ted Talk. While I’m not a big Ted Talk fan in general, there are a few I’m quite fond of, and this is one of them.
After watching the video in full, identify and analyze 1-2 rhetorical strategies Urban uses in his talk. Our goal is to explore which strategies he uses to the best effect.
The hardest part about rhetorical analysis is taking the analysis far enough. For example, it’s not enough to say, “Urban uses a lot of humor in his talk.” That’s just identifying rhetorical appeals. Our goal is analysis. In this example, once you’ve identified the strategy/appeal, you need to go further by discussing how and why the humor is effective for the intended audience and message.
