Length Requirement: Two to three pages Document Type: Internal memorandum Your Role: An employee at a company you hope to work after graduating Intended Audience: Your supervisor Source Requirement: Three sources about your selected innovation in your field Documentation Style: APA Prompt Start by picturing yourself graduated and employed, and the company for which you work has been having problems with its latest project that has caused your company to lose time, money, and/or potential clients. To begin this assignment, identify a new innovation in your field—this innovation does not have to be brand new; it might just be new to your or to your company/area—and collect at least three sources describing this innovation. You will have to know your innovation, what it involves, and both its advantages and disadvantages to do this assignment well. Then, with the innovation in mind, create an imaginary situation in which a previous product or process has caused the problem(s) that has led to the loss of time, money, and/or potential clients. In order to address this problem(s), you believe that the innovation you have discovered could solve the problem(s) your company is facing. Therefore, for this assignment, you should use the preliminary research about your selected innovation to compose an internal proposal to your boss in order to persuade them to implement said innovation. When composing your memo, you should include the following bold and blue headings so that you will get used to using headings for the types of sections and information you need to address. Note: Please ensure that your section headings are formatted in bold font, but do not color them blue. I formatted the headings in blue simply to help them standout more to you. Please make your sections headings black and bold font. To: Your supervisor’s name, title or position From: Your name, title or position Subject: Specific and descriptive—think of this almost like an essay title; it should inform the reader of the main idea of the memo Date: Write it out; do not use numerals Purpose: For this section, write a one- to two-sentence statement why you are writing the memo. Summary: Write a one- to two-paragraph summary for the entire proposal. This summary should include details from EACH section of the proposal. Introduction or Statement of the Problem: This section should give background information and indicate what occurred that caused a problem. The introduction is the critical part of the proposal, as your proposal will be meaningless unless you are able to demonstrate there is a problem that needs solved or an opportunity for growth. Therefore, you must clearly show that you understand what the problem or opportunity is by giving specific details. Since this is a fictitious situation that you are creating, you will make these details up. And, remember to quantify or give numbers where appropriate to demonstrate the losses the company has experienced and/or the gains the company can anticipate experiencing. Initial Research Findings: This section should indicate what you have discovered in your research, requiring you to: Describe your innovation in detail, and Mention what you found—good and bad—about the innovation. Because you are expected to explore both the pros and cons of your innovation, you may choose to use level 2 section headings to enhance the section’s organization. Since you must incorporate information from your sources in this section, it will be necessary for you to include both in-text citations and bibliographic citations to properly cite your work. Note: Whether you are directly quoting or paraphrasing, information that is not common knowledge must be cited both in-text and bibliographically. When conceptualizing what constitutes “common knowledge,” think of it as information that you would expect someone with a middle-grades education to know (e.g., George Washington was the first president of the United States). Analysis of the Problem: Even though you may think it’s obvious, you need to directly help your reader see how your innovation will answer the company’s need or solve the problem. Therefore, this section should specifically bring in details from the introduction and link them to how your proposed innovation can resolve or mitigate those issues. Remember, this section is the bridge between your research and your recommendation. Recommendation: In light of the information provided in previous sections of your proposal, this section should specifically identify the actions you are proposing to your boss that the company should take. References: This section is where you will provide the bibliographic citations for your sources. Note: Since this assignment is not written as a traditional academic essay, your References section will appear directly after the Recommendation section, not as a separate page in the document. ** This assignment should not be written as a traditional academic writing assignment; you should create a document that is intended to mirror tenets of technical writing.
