Length Requirement: Three to five pages Document Type: Internal memorandum Your Role: An employee at a company you hope to work after graduating Intended Audience: Your supervisor Source Requirement: Three sources about your selected innovation in your field Documentation Style: APA Prompt For this assignment, you have been asked by your boss to write a technical report on the innovation you researched for your proposal. Although, your technical report is to be written on the same innovation as your proposal, the technical report is to be considered a stand-alone document; basically, approach this assignment as if your innovation is going to be implemented and your are reporting information about the innovation to your boss and other company shareholders. Note: Since this report will remain within your company, this will be an informal report in memo format. It will not require a letter of transmittal, title page, table of contents or an abstract. When composing your memo, you should include the following bold and blue headings so that you will get used to using headings for the types of sections and information you need to address. Note: Please ensure that your section headings are formatted in bold font, but do not color them blue. I formatted the headings in blue simply to help them standout more to you. Please make your sections headings black and bold font. To: Your supervisor’s name, title or position From: Your name, title or position Subject: Specific and descriptive—think of this almost like an essay title; it should inform the reader of the main idea of the memo Date: Write it out; do not use numerals Purpose: For this section, write a one- to two-sentence statement why you are writing the memo. Summary: Write a one- to two-paragraph summary for the entire proposal. This summary should include details from EACH section of the proposal. Description: Begin this section with a technical description of your innovation that: Begins the introductory paragraph with a formal sentence definition. Explains exactly (a) what the new product or process is, (b) the need for it, (c) who uses it, and (d) how it works. Optional: You may include a diagram or picture of the item, or, if you are describing a process, you might make a flow chart that shows the progress from one phase of the process to the next. Be sure to refer to the graphic in the text and adequately describe and label it. Remember to include a sentence that mentions the main components or physical features you are describing (or steps if you are describing a process). Include the following level two headings: Physical Features or Steps of the Process: Separately list and describe each feature or step of your innovation. Application: Describe (a) how the item or process used, (b) who uses the innovation, (c) who benefits from using the innovation, and (d) how the groups you’ve identified benefit from using the innovation. Comparison with Other Techniques or Comparison with Other Products: This section should describe the characteristics of your innovation and compare it with characteristics of what item or process the company has been using and/or other similar items or processes that are available. To achieve the goals of this section, it will be necessary for you to utilize research from other sources. Since you must incorporate information from your sources in this section, it will be necessary for you to include both in-text citations and bibliographic citations to properly cite your work. Note: Whether you are directly quoting or paraphrasing, information that is not common knowledge must be cited both in-text and bibliographically. When conceptualizing what constitutes “common knowledge,” think of it as information that you would expect someone with a middle-grades education to know (e.g., George Washington was the first president of the United States). This section should also include a table or figure, which you should prepare yourself that compares one aspect of your innovation (cost, availability, percentage of use, efficiency, time etc.) with the same aspect of the item or process you company been using or the item or process one or two other companies use. Be sure to fully integrate the graphic into your report by (a) titling your graphic, (b) fully labeling your graphic, and (c) referring to and describing your graphic in the text. Note: You may not use a table or figure developed by another writer that you located on the Internet. With that in mind, I realize that the information you need to make the table or figure may not be readily available, but, since I am basically interested in your ability to appropriately construct a graph or table and integrate it into the text, you may make up the information needed to do a graphic comparison. Advantages of : For this section, write a short paragraph introducing the advantages of the innovation. Then, present each and discuss each advantage in a bulleted list. Disadvantages of : For this section, write a short paragraph introducing the disadvantages of the innovation. Then, present and discuss each disadvantage in a bulleted list. Conclusion: For this section, you should analyze the potential benefits. While developing this section, consider the following questions: Do the benefits justify the cost, risk and effort involved? Will the use of this innovation be of value to your business or clients? Will the benefits be readily recognizable? References: This section is where you will provide the bibliographic citations for your sources. Note: Since this assignment is not written as a traditional academic essay, your References section will appear directly after the Recommendation section, not as a separate page in the document. ** This assignment should not be written as a traditional academic writing assignment; you should create a document that is intended to mirror tenets of technical writing.
