INSTRUCTIONS
This week we have another police shooting where the officer involved uses their discretion, which is informed by the law, training and experience when perceiving a threat warranting the use of deadly force. Like all police shootings that go viral, the public, will be divided on whether the cop was “reasonable” or “racist.” Whether cops are better able to judge “danger” than an ordinary reasonable person because of their “training and experience” or whether cops are more likely to disguise implict bias, by using language taken verbatum from case law to make perceived threats appear more imminent.
This week’s case includes the search terms; “Betty Jo Shelby,” “Terence Crutcher,” “Tulsa, Oklahoma police department.” I am purposely not giving you any links. It’s time you do your own research from scratch. This week the grading will focus on how well you cover the various issues surrounding police use of deadly force. Your writing style, and how well you introduce your topic, discuss your topic, and conclude your points (Introduction, body, conclusion) will also factor into your grade. As always, include citations for all sources.
Pretend you’re to give a TED talk entitled, “Regarding police shootings, should cops act according to the “spirit,” or the “letter” of the law?”
Your audience includes “Back the Bluers” and “Defund the Policers.”
Assignment: In no more than 500 words, tell me what you will say making sure you are objective and don’t alienate half the audience.
