Conduct the interview with your interviewee.
During the interview, record/tape their responses if they had agreed that they were comfortable with you doing so, or take detailed notes if they prefer not to be recorded. You do not need to turn in the audio, but it can be extremely helpful when you are writing up the transcript.
Write a transcript of your interview. Include your questions and your interviewee’s answers. If follow-up questions to your planned ones come up, include those as well.
Be as thorough as possible in recording their answers to your questions. Again, either record audio if consented to or take detailed notes if not.
IIP Part 4: Synthesize what you learned

Using your transcript, go back to the categories of questions that you wrote. What did you learn in each?
Question Group 1: General details of their life
-What did you learn about their life? Were there things that surprised you or that you didn’t know before?
Question Group 2: Historical (cohort) events
-What kinds of events did they report as standing out? How did they affect them? Did they talk about the event in relation to the age that they were when it happened? What might have been different if they were a different age?
Question Group 3: Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages
-Which of Erikson’s stages do you think your interviewee is in based on their answers to your questions? What specific things helped you decide which stage fit best?
Question Group 4: What did you learn from your interviewee?
-What lessons did you take away from the advice that they gave you? Did any of their insights surprise you? How might you incorporate their reflections into your own life going forward?
