For this assignment you’ll be using a real interview recording from Boston’s finest detectives as they interview the Craig’s List killerLinks to an external site.. (Pretend you suspect him of killing the man with the Watermelon) Consider the interrogation techniques you read about in the chapter and ancillary materials as you listen to this audio. Once you think you have a good handle on the process get ready to make a concept map.
First, in the readings you’ll see a document titled Interrogation Techniques from the OLR Research ReportLinks to an external site.. You’ll be using this extensively. In that report they discussed the Reid technique and the nine steps that technique employs. You will be applying these nine steps to the interview you heard from the Craigslist killer in an attempt to see if you can identify the steps as they are played out. Be careful; this is an exercise in reading between the lines and listening to what is really happening beyond hearing the words.
Next: to the the GoConqr.comLinks to an external site. website and make a FREE account. Do NOT pay for the account, they are free. Use your QC credentials to get it set up. Play around with this website a bit and familiarize yourself with how to make a concept map; then you will be ready to put this assignment together. Your objective is to create a concept map whereby you map any 5 of the 9 steps of the Reid technique with the Craigslist interview, then summarize the parts of the audio that correlate with each step. You do not have to make this in any certain order or fashion, a simple “octopus shape” concept map will do.
The center bubble (node) of your map should be labeled “Reid technique” then there will be 5 extensions from that center bubble outward to other bubbles representing the 5 steps of the Reid technique. (It will look like a spider’s legs) Remember, you can map out any 5 of the steps you want. At the end of each “leg” you’ll create another node and label it as one of the steps you’ve chosen to focus on. Then, you’ll make another leg to another node summarizing or capturing what was said in the video that relates to that step of the process.
For example, consider step two “theme development”. Your map would flow like this: Reid technique node in the center of the page, an extension line to another node labeled “Theme Development”, then another extension line to a node summarizing the statements from the video where the detective developed the alternate theme of a “date gone wrong”.
