For this assignment I have posted information from another texbook that explains basic priority scores. See the posted PDF in this module called Hanlon Method. First look at page 67 in the PDF. The Hanlon Method is described on this page but were interested in the pages that follow. This method takes in account the size of the problem, seriousness of the problem, effectiveness of an intervention and whether or not an intervention can actually be carried out. The example in the text describes using a dog bite as a problem. Simple calculations can be applied and a priority score determined. For this assignment you will need to prioritize three injury problems and rank. Using the equation on page 72 determine the rank of motor vehicle injuries, flu epidemic, and firearm injuries. Use the equation D= [A+(2xB] x C found on page 72. This is based off your opinion when determining the category numbers. Ex. When determining the population affected some may say 25% or more with a score of 9 (see page 70). Others may argue only 10% of the population is affected. You be the judge.
Example for sport concussions might look like this using this ranking system.
Population affected – 1%-9.9% = 5
Seriousness of injury problem – moderately seriousness = 4
Available intervention – relative effective = 7
[5 + (2×5)] x 7
[5+10] x 7
15 x 7
105
You will need to calculate scores for (A) motor vehicle injuries, (B) flu epidemic, and (C) firearm injuries. Give it a try and see which injury has the highest priority score. Submit your results as a word file using this dropbox.
