Bibliography:
Make sure you cite numerous scholarly sources. This means books, journals,
databases, etc. Do not rely exclusively on popular websites. You must have at least
four (4) scholarly sources for this assignment.
Remember:
• create an argument, not an “information dump”
• write a clear one-sentence thesis statement, placed first in the essay.
• use MLA or APA format
• use your name as the file name (not “Research Essay”)
• use a formal voice for an academic audience
• one idea per paragraph (first sentence is the topic sentence)
• proper paragraph structure
• minimum of four (4) scholarly sources

Once again, here are useful things to consider:
• The thesis statement is one over-arching idea, simply stated and subsequently to be
supported and proven.
• Place the thesis statement as the first sentence in your essay (this is to help me, but it’s a
good practice). Do not write a rambling generalized introduction (as you might have been
taught in high school). Realize you are writing for a specialized/academic audience, not a
general one without—perhaps—an extensive education.
• Academic audiences are different than general audiences and want you to state your
argument directly and succinctly. An introduction should do three things: state the thesis,
explain why that thesis is valuable/important/worthwhile, and outline the argument
following in the subsequent body paragraphs.
• Place the topic sentences as the first sentence in each of the body paragraphs (this is to
help me, but it’s a good practice).
• Only use one subsidiary point/idea in each body paragraph.
• A usual average paragraph length is two-per-page, double-spaced in a reasonable font.
However, that’s not a hard-and-fast rule. Do try to have your body paragraphs much the
same length, though, or the essay becomes lop-sided and unbalanced.
• Very short paragraphs (less than five sentences) are more like notes than proper
paragraphs. Very long paragraphs (nearly one page) seem like rambling.
• Develop an argument that proceeds logically point-by-point.
• Begin working immediately and—if you wish–email me an outline as soon as possible.
• Leave time to edit and revise your essay. Rushed work is never your best possible work
