Provide an example of an evidenced-based process that you either have helped implement or are familiar with in your workplace setting. Discuss both its effectiveness and what could be done differently.

The concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) is a fundamental approach in healthcare, requiring health professionals to integrate the best available evidence with the context of care delivery, patient preferences, and their own expertise when making clinical decisions (Cardoso et al., 2021). This approach aims to ensure that patient care is rooted in reliable and current evidence while considering individual needs and circumstances. In order to address the challenge of reducing fall rates and enhancing patient safety, our health organization developed an evidence-based process to systematically analyze fall rates and identify contributing factors, such as slippery floors and inadequate lighting. Additionally, we conducted interviews with patients to gain insights into their experiences with falls. Based on the findings of these assessments, we tailored interventions and actively engaged leadership and staff in the process. Subsequently, we implemented evidence-based strategies, including the installation of non-slip flooring, placement of warning signs, and patient education programs. Importantly, we also took into account patient preferences to create more effective interventions aimed at fall prevention. To gauge the impact of these initiatives, we continuously monitored fall rates, adjusted interventions as necessary, and ensured sustained improvement. As a result of these evidence-based strategies, we observed a significant reduction in fall rates within our organization. Moving forward, areas for improvement include fostering greater adoption of this program across our facilities, maintaining ongoing commitment and adherence, and enhancing our ability to customize interventions based on the unique needs and contexts of individual patients. The success of this program underscores the importance of evidence-based practice in driving positive outcomes for patient safety and well-being.

Funmilayo and class,
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has a great website that walks through a change initiative related to preventing falls in a hospital. I highly recommend reading this site as it spurs you to ask yourselves some great questions and how to approach implementing the change. Share your thoughts here if you get a chance to read this: https://www.ahrq.gov/professionals/systems/hospital/fallpxtoolkit/fallpxtk2.html

At my current workplace, in an outpatient multi-specialty facility, we implemented an evidence-based process for assessing and treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). One example is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, which has a strong evidence base in improving social behaviors, communication skills, and adaptive functioning in children with ASD. The implementation of ABA therapy has shown significant effectiveness in our setting. We’ve observed improvements in targeted behaviors, communication abilities, and overall adaptive skills among children undergoing this therapy. Parents have reported positive changes in their children’s behavior and interactions. While ABA therapy has been effective, there are areas where enhancements could be considered – for instance, incorporating digital tools options such as behavioral tracking and monitoring apps or devices which will allow therapists to analyze patterns and make informed adjustments to treatment plans (Cordioli, M., 2022) or Virtual Reality (VR) therapy for individuals with high-functioning Autism which can create controlled environments to help practice social interactions, sensory integration, and real-life scenarios in a safe and structured manner (Bozgeyikli, L., et al., 2017).

Isabella and class,
Here’s a study that ties to my post regarding quality monitoring- this study looks at quality monitoring and management of health plans. Think about your organizations quality plan and monitoring activities and consider way in which you could incorporate these activities into the maintenance of your project topics. With your topic in mind, what compliance or accreditation factors might you need to consider? What additional information, documentation, or stakeholders could be impacted and how can you be prepared for this prior to implementation?

Before conducting my research on patient satisfaction in pediatric therapy services, thorough preparation is essential. Firstly, understanding ethical guidelines regarding research involving minors is vital. This includes obtaining informed consent from caregivers and ensuring stringent confidentiality measures (Helseth S, & Slettebo A., 2004). Secondly, I must acquaint myself with regulatory requirements specific to healthcare research, such as obtaining approvals from an institutional review board (if necessary), and adhering to data protection laws like HIPAA. It’s also critical to align my research plan with accreditation standards (Williams, E. D., & Schoonmaker, M.,2005), such as those set by the Joint Commission, to ensure adherence to quality benchmarks. Documenting a comprehensive methodology and engaging early with stakeholders- therapists, pediatric patients, caregivers, and healthcare administrators will provide valuable insights and ensure alignment with their needs and expectations.
