Discuss how two texts engage with a similar theme or related
themes in different ways one of the texts being Sula, and other being “Because I could not stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson. Do not try to discuss everything in Sula – it is perfectly fine to focus on one section, or even one moment. Your response should include at least one in-depth close reading of a specific passage from both texts you are comparing.
For this assignment you will present an argument, articulated in a thesis statement in the introduction which the paper goes on to support with evidence, primarily in the form of close reading.
Your paper must be at least 5 full pages in length, double-spaced, with 12-point Times New
Roman font and 1-inch margins. There is no maximum length; however, it is highly unlikely that
you should need to go significantly beyond 6 pages. Any quotations that take up 4 or more lines
should be formatted as a single-spaced block quotation.
• The paper must have a thoughtful and original title.
• It must have an argument which appears in the introduction.
• Strive to offer a risky, concise, compelling and original thesis.
– A risky thesis dares to go beyond what is readily evident in the texts. Your thesis may
be as counterintuitive as you please, so long as you support your argument with
evidence from the texts.
– A concise thesis is focused. The goal is to demonstrate how a specific connection,
contrast, relationship, etc. between the two texts sheds light on both texts more
broadly.
– A compelling thesis uses evidence from the texts to support and develop its claims.
– An original thesis goes well beyond points made in class.
• The paper should have transitions between paragraphs that facilitate the progression of your
argument.
• The length of your analysis should exceed that of any passages you cite (often, your analysis will
be double or triple the length of the passage).
• Your readings should incorporate contextual detail, including passages immediately preceding or
following your chosen passage(s); passages elsewhere in the text(s); any major themes, issues,
etc. addressed by the text(s). No additional research beyond your notes from class, information
provided in notes and glosses, and definitions from the OED is necessary for this assignment.
• As always, your paper should have a sense of audience – i.e. write not to yourself but to your
reader. It should not read as a casual journal entry but as a formal writing assignment. Imagine
for your paper an audience that has read the texts but not in the precise manner you have. This
audience therefore needs a bit of hand-holding in order to follow your points
