Notes for Essay 2
1.) Write a working thesis statement below. Express the central idea/connection you intend to make in one clear sentence that includes the titles of the two stories.
2.) Summarize the most important scene in each story that will help you demonstrate your thesis. Just explain what happens and how that is related to your thesis.
Story 1:
Story 2:
3.) What is the most important element of fiction for you to discuss for each story in order to demonstrate your thesis? Is it the conflict, the main character or relationship between two characters, the setting, the plot or a shift in the events of the plot? We’ve also discussed the impact of point of view and the endings of the stories.
Story 1:
Story 2:
4.) For Story 1, choose one passage or scene from the early part of the story to discuss, then draft a paragraph following this format:
–Write a sentence that introduces the story by title and connects the story to your thesis idea
–Write a sentence or two that sets up the context for the passage you will discuss: explain where in the story the passage appears and what’s happening or happened before that is important? A bit of summary is useful here so that your reader steps into the story where you want them to.
–Quote the passage directly: exactly words in quotation marks. This is the textual evidence.
–Offer your analysis by making specific points about what the quote says and then making connections between that scene and the theme being discussed. Develop your ideas in as much depth as you can.
5.) Do the same for Story 2 using the template above
6.) Go back over the journals and postings you’ve written on the stories and see if there is anything you can use in your essay. If you find good material, just note where it is below.
