Complete your required discussion prompts:
Patient Autonomy vs. The Sanctity of Life:
PAS and euthanasia raise the question of patient autonomy: the right to make decisions about one’s own body. On the other hand, there’s the concept of the “sanctity of life” – the belief that all human life is inherently valuable and should be preserved.
How can we balance these competing principles?
Should terminally ill patients with decision-making capacity have the right to choose PAS or euthanasia? Why or why not? Use one of the 6 acceptable theories to back up your stance.
Which ethical theory is the strongest one against PAS – explain.
The Slippery Slope Argument:
Some argue that legalizing PAS and euthanasia creates a “slippery slope” where these practices become more common and could be misused. For example, pressure might be placed on vulnerable patients to choose death.
How can we ensure safeguards are in place to prevent abuse while respecting patient autonomy?
Do you believe the slippery slope argument is a valid concern? Why or why not?
