Choose a US-based nonprofit local to you or that you care about, supported in the past, or one that you’re interested in and are considering supporting. Choose one that has at least three years of data available. You will use this organization as your focus for the rest of the discussions and assignments.
Things to consider as you complete this assignment:
Visit your selected nonprofit’s website. Review its site and locate its: a) most recent annual report and b) most recent 990 forms. (If you need help finding the most recent 990 forms available on the website, look for them on the IRS website.)
Review the organization’s mission.
Using the template provided, construct a high-level financial analysis for this organization. Provide three years of data. You will disregard the fourth (current budget) column and use only the most recent three years of data for columns one, two, and three.
Reviewing the nonprofit’s most recent annual reports or 990s (which should be available for public disclosure), identify the organization’s total revenues, total expenses, and net assets at the end of the year. You should see a comparison of how the nonprofit did in recent and prior years. What do the numbers tell you? Is there anything you find concerning or surprising?
What are the nonprofit’s most significant sources of revenue or their largest expenditures? Do those items support the stated mission?
Choose another similar nonprofit (with three years of financial data available). Complete the financial health analysis tool. How does your chosen organization compare? What is similar? What is different? Do you see a trend between the two?
What other thoughts did you have doing this analysis?
Submit as a Word document, double-spaced, 11-12-point font, between 8-10 pages.
You may use the graphics from the analysis tool to illustrate your points, but you do not need to submit the analysis tools with your assignment.
